Finland to strengthen EU treatment of aviation security issues
Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications has decided as to how aviation security is to be handled with optimal effectiveness during the period of Finland’s Presidency of the EU. The reason for this is the terrorist plan that has been revealed in the UK.
Finland emphasises that the proposal to amend the regulation on aviation security which is presently being processed in the EU should be approved as soon as possible. The changes to the regulation are aimed specifically at improving aviation security.
In order to deal with the proposed amendment Finland has called a meeting of the Transport Council’s aviation working party for the first week in September. As the country holding the EU Presidency, Finland is also actively trying to find a common political view of the matter with the European Parliament.
Finland has also asked the Commission to bring forward the meeting of the EU’s expert committee dealing with aviation security. The committee will meet on 30 August.
The Council of Transport Ministers will deal with the change of the aviation security regulation on the next occasion at its meeting 12 October. At this meeting the ministers will also conduct a broader review of the impacts on aviation security of the terrorist attempt in the UK.
Finland is sending a letter concerning its plans to the ministers responsible for aviation security in the other EU member states.
