  2. 24.4.2026 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London from 27 April to 1 May 2026. IMO Member States are expected to decide the next steps in negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. Other topics to be discussed include specifications to the rules on the carbon intensity and energy efficiency of vessels, the regulation of ballast water and guidance on reducing underwater noise.

  4. 20.10.2023 | On 19 and 20 October 2023, the Government and the President of the Republic discussed the national approval of amendments made to conventions adopted by the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization, IMO. The amendments concern the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments.

  5. 18.9.2023 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the national adoption of convention amendments adopted by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The amendments have been made to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments.   7. 16.2.2023 | On 16 February 2023, the President of the Republic approved amendments to the Postal Act. At the same time, provisions on government grants for newspaper delivery included in the Postal Act were confirmed. The support will be regulated in more detail in a government decree. The aim is to ensure equal access to postal services as well as to secure the conditions for the five-day delivery of newspapers across Finland.

  9. 16.10.2023 | The EU ministers responsible for the environment and climate change issues will meet in Luxembourg on 16 October to discuss the EU’s objectives for the negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Dubai. The conclusions to be adopted by the Environment Council will constitute the EU’s objective for the Climate Change Conference. Finland’s representative at the Environment Council will be Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen.

  10. The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London on 7–11 April 2025. The objective of the Committee’s 83rd session is to agree on legally binding measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. The reduction targets have been agreed on in the IMO’s greenhouse gas strategy.

The National Cyber Security Office, based at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and the Finnish Terminology Centre are requesting comments on a draft of an updated Cybersecurity Glossary. The deadline for submitting comments is 20 March 2026. The glossary project is part of an implementation plan of Finland’s Cyber Security Strategy 2024–2035.

  17. 29.6.2022 | The EU target of carbon neutrality by 2050 at the latest was decided during Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2019. On 29 June 2022, the EU Environment Council in Luxembourg reached general approaches on the key legislative proposals of the 55% emission reduction target by 2030, i.e. the Fit for 55 package, after long negotiations.

Following complex negotiations and a rare vote, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) decided to postpone the final adoption of the long-discussed regulation package on maritime transport emissions by at least one year. The decision means that the proposed regulation will not come into force as originally scheduled in March 2027.

  20. In line with the Programme of Prime Minister Orpo's Government, Finland's Cyber Security Strategy has been revised to respond to the changed security environment. The objectives of the revised strategy extend to 2035. A strategy implementation plan has been drawn to describe the development measures to achieve the objectives. The plan was approved on 3 December 2024 by the steering group of the project developing an operating model for government security management.
