Following complex negotiations and a rare vote, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) decided to postpone the final adoption of the long-discussed regulation package on maritime transport emissions by at least one year. 20.5.2025 | The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy decided on 20 May 2025 to fully finance flight connections between six regional airports and Helsinki up to 27 February 2028. Air connections to the city of Savonlinna, however, will be funded out of government funds up to 50 per cent only. The decision is based on the spring 2026 government discussion on spending limits.

The rolling stock will be transferred to Suomen Ostoliikennekalusto's ownership from the beginning of March.

9.10.2025 | The rolling stock company Suomen Ostoliikennekalusto Oy will be transferred from VR Group to direct state ownership and ownership steering at the Prime Minister’s Office. The transfer of ownership is a significant step in preparing for the competitive tendering of rail transport services.

28.9.2021 | On 21 May 2021, central government and municipal negotiators reached an agreement on establishing a project company for planning the Itärata eastern rail link. The company would be tasked with planning and financing the Lentorata–Porvoo–Kouvola railway line project until the line is ready for construction. The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy discussed the establishment of the project company from the state’s point of view on 28 September 2021.

30.9.2024 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization convenes in London from 30 September to 4 October 2024. The 82nd session of the Committee continues the negotiations on global actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. The topics include the package of a possible fuel standard and a price for carbon emissions. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki attends the session on 30 September–2 October 2024.

19.12.2024 | Finland’s Central Government and other operators are applying for a total of approximately EUR 73.36 million in financial support for 11 transport projects from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport. In addition, EU funding is being sought for the acquisition of a new icebreaker. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 19 December 2024.
