26.9.2018 | The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority will start the auction of operating licences within the spectrum of 3410-3800 MHz on 26 September 2018. There are three network licences in the auction.

20.11.2019 | On 22 November 2019, the Ministry of Transport and Communications circulated the draft Act on Electronic Communication Services for comments. Among other things, the legislative reform aims to promote the availability of broadband networks and communications services as well as the consumer rights and the accessibility of the services.

4.6.2020 | The Croatian Presidency of the Council of the European Union held an informal video meeting of transport ministers on 4 June. In the meeting, Finland was represented by Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka.

28.10.2019 | The World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) takes place in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt as of 28 October. The conference decides on the future use of radio spectrum. The WRC aims at facilitating rational use of radio spectrum and providing a suitable environment for future services. Finland participates in the decision-making to shape future communications services at a global scale.

4.5.2020 | On Tuesday, 5 May 2020, Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka will attend an informal video conference of EU telecommunications ministers.

8.4.2021 | On 8 April 2021, the Finnish Government issued a decree amending the radio spectrum usage and frequency allocation plan (Spectrum Decree). The decree will enter into force on 9 April 2021.

4.11.2021 | The Government welcomes the European Commission's proposal to establish a common charging solution for mobile phones and similar radio devices using wire charging. These include tablets, headphones, headphones with microphones and handheld videogame consoles. The standard port for the common charger would be USB-C.

15.4.2021 | The Government adopted the National Transport System Plan for 2021-2032 and submitted it in the form of a report to Parliament on 15 April 2021.

8.10.2020 | According to the working group on digital aviation, a favourable legislative environment, consistent official activities and a fair competitive environment can contribute to the development of digital aviation in Finland.

1.11.2019 | Minister of Transport and Communications Sanna Marin has appointed a working group to prepare a climate and environmental strategy for the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. The term of the working group will be from 1 November 2019 to 30 November 2020. The aim is to form a common view on the climate and environmental impacts of the sector in Finland and recommend measures to control them.

8.6.2020 | On Monday 8 June, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency will open the auction of the frequencies of the 26 GHz spectrum. This is the second time Finland auctions frequencies for high-speed 5G mobile networks. 

19.9.2017 | The Government proposes that EUR 3.36 billion be allocated to the administrative branch of the Ministry of Transport and Communications for 2018. It is EUR 134 million more than in the 2017 budget.

22.6.2005 | The Government of Finland has granted an operating licence to build a new digital mobile communications network. Flash-OFDM was chosen as the technology for the network. This is the first time in the world the technology will be taken in extensive use in mobile networks.

26.11.2020 | The Government proposes that the Act on Strong Electronic Identification and Electronic Trust Services be amended. The amendment would extend the maximum price regulation for the chaining of electronic initial identification data by two years. The maximum price would continue to be three cents.

21.12.2006 | As of 2007 the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority will start issuing licences for programmes broadcast in the new mobile television network. This type of a light operating licence procedure is expected to promote both the use of mobile television and the diversity of programmes offered in the mobile television network.

23.3.2006 | An operating licence for the fourth digital broadcasting network, which is intended for mobile television broadcasts and services, has been granted to Digita. The Government issued the licence on 23 March.

11.7.2018 | The Finnish Government issued on 11 July an invitation to apply for electronic communications licences for the purpose of providing telecommunications services within the 3.5 GHz spectrum (3410-3800 MHz). The spectrum can be used for wireless broadband nationwide in mainland Finland from the beginning of 2019, and it is well suited for the construction of the first 5G networks in Finland.
