11.3.2021 | Prime Minister Marin's Government is planning three broadband aid schemes. The first one was launched as the Government issued a decree on minimum connection speed and the financial contribution of municipalities. The Act on Broadband Construction Aid entered into force at the turn of the year and the Government issued the decree on 11 March. It will enter into force on 15 March 2021.

13.3.2024 | On 13 March 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published the results of a survey on the future need for broadband aid. The survey assesses previous broadband aid schemes, the current state of the markets and any need for a new aid scheme.

17.4.2020 | The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom granted mobility management subsidies for 35 projects in different parts of Finland with an aim to support sustainable mobility and influence people's choice of modes of travel. 

9.10.2023 | The Government proposes that nearly EUR 3.6 billion be allocated to the administrative branch of the Ministry of Transport and Communications for 2024.

17.6.2020 | On 17 June 2020, the Government granted network licences for the 26 GHz spectrum to Elisa Corporation, DNA Plc and Telia Finland Plc, in accordance with the outcome of a spectrum auction. The frequencies are available to the telecom operators for the construction of high-speed wireless 5G networks from the beginning of July.

29.4.2024 | Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will visit Narvik, Norway, from 29 to 30 April 2024. Together with the Norwegian and Swedish transport ministers, she will observe NATO’s Immediate Response 2024 defence exercise, which will practise military mobility and reception of military support.

31.3.2022 | The final report on the action programme on accessibility of digital transport and communication services was published on 31 March 2022. The purpose of the programme, which was completed in 2021, was to improve the accessibility of transport and communications services and to increase the awareness of the importance of accessibility.

23.2.2018 | Minister of Transport and Communications Anne Berner will visit Barcelona to attend the Mobile World Congress from 26 to 27 February 2018.

10.4.2024 | The European Union has granted EUR 1.9 million to Finnish businesses for constructing recharging points for electric cars in the Baltic States and EUR 4.2 million for constructing hydrogen charging points in Finland. Funding was granted under the Transport Programme of the Connecting Europe Facility, CEF.

16.7.2024 | The European Commission awarded EUR 39.11 million in funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to 11 projects in Finland. Five central government projects received a total of EUR 20.16 million and six private sector projects a total of EUR 18.96 million in funding.

22.6.2023 | Finland has successfully applied for EU funding. The European Commission awarded funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to seven projects in Finland. Funding was received for rail transport and port projects. They include central government projects and projects by other operators.

7.12.2022 | The EU's telecommunications ministers convened in Brussels on 6 December 2022. Finland was represented by State Secretary Pilvi Torsti. The meeting dealt with various proposals for regulations promoting digitalisation and its use.

21.9.2023 | The Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU will hold an informal meeting of transport ministers in Barcelona on 21–22 September 2023. Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will represent Finland at the meeting. It will be an informal meeting where no decisions are taken.

7.4.2022 | On 7 April 2022, the Government submitted to Parliament its proposal for amending the Rail Transport Act. The Government proposes that provisions be included in the Act on requirements for a licence to transfer a vehicle and for various test and pilot projects.

20.11.2023 | The World Radiocommunication Conference WRC-23 will start in Dubai on 20 November 2023. The conference decides on the future use of the radio spectrum. The goal is to increase the use of radio frequencies and enable new technologies and services. Finland participates in decision-making at the conference and is globally influencing future communication services to ensure competitiveness and international accessibility. 

22.6.2022 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications published a memorandum on 22 June 2022 concerning the must carry obligation for television and radio programming. A legislative project decision was also issued with a view to amending the provisions of the Information Society Code (917/2014) governing the must carry obligation for radio programming.

5.9.2022 | On 5 September 2022, the Ministry of Transport and Communications sent out an invitation to comment a draft proposal for amending the Act on Electronic Communications Services. According to the proposal, the must-carry obligation would be waived.

15.9.2022 | On 15 September 2022, the European Commission published a proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on horizontal cybersecurity requirements for digital products and ancillary services, i.e. Cyber Resilience Act, CRA. The purpose of the proposal is to protect consumers, in particular, against cybersecurity risks that the increasing number of connected devices can generate.

24.3.2021 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has sent a memorandum concerning the retention of electronic communication traffic data to be circulated for statements. The Ministry uses the memorandum to collect opinions on whether the Finnish regulation needs to be changed.

20.11.2019 | On 22 November 2019, the Ministry of Transport and Communications circulated the draft Act on Electronic Communication Services for comments. Among other things, the legislative reform aims to promote the availability of broadband networks and communications services as well as the consumer rights and the accessibility of the services.

11.6.2020 | The Government is proposing a reform to the Act on Electronic Communications Services. The objectives of the change include the improvement of the consumers' position, the promotion of both investments into communications networks and the availability of communications services as well as ensuring the security of communication networks better. The Government gave the proposal to the Parliament on Thursday, 11 June 2020.

17.12.2010 | Finland and Russia have held negotiations on making the 800 frequency band available for mobile communications. As a result of the negotiations, Finland may begin the construction of LTE test networks within this frequency band.
