  2. 7.5.2026 | On 7 May 2026, the Government submitted for approval amendments to the Act on Transport Services, the Driving Licence Act, the Act on the Organisation of Driver Examinations and the Act on the Enforcement of a Fine. The amendments aim to improve the operating conditions for the transport sector. Most of the acts and the amended decree will enter into force on 15 May 2026.

  3. 2.4.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the national adoption of convention amendments adopted by the Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The amendments concern the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). The deadline for submitting comments is 19 April 2024.

  4. 24.4.2026 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London from 27 April to 1 May 2026. IMO Member States are expected to decide the next steps in negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. Other topics to be discussed include specifications to the rules on the carbon intensity and energy efficiency of vessels, the regulation of ballast water and guidance on reducing underwater noise.

  5. 16.4.2026 | A Finnish-led project has applied for EUR 9.55 million in European Commission funding to reinforce subsea cable repair capacity. The project is coordinated by the Finnish National Emergency Supply Agency and involves partners from Finland, Sweden and Estonia. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the proposal on 16 April 2026.

  8. 6.3.2012 | Proposal for transport policy report by the Ministry of Transport and Communications has been sent to interest groups for comments. Comments are requested by 12 March. The report sets out transport policy guidelines and the associated action plan until the end of 2022 as well as a vision and desired state for transport policy for 2030.

  9. 2.3.2026 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft government proposal for revised Ship Safety Control Act. The new act would repeal the current Ship Safety Control Act and introduce national legislation implementing the ship safety control regulation of the European Union’s so-called Maritime Safety Package.
