The preparations have advanced well and from Finland's point of view the work will lay a good groundwork for the regulatory drafting in the matter.

13.3.2024 | On 13 March 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published the results of a survey on the future need for broadband aid. The survey assesses previous broadband aid schemes, the current state of the markets and any need for a new aid scheme.

Among other things, the legislative reform aims to promote the availability of broadband networks and communications services as well as the consumer rights and the accessibility of the services.

The Government made a decision on the matter on 8 August 2019.

28.11.2019 | The Government has granted a licence for the Virve public authority radio network to Suomen Turvallisuusverkko on 28 November 2019. The state-owned Suomen Turvallisuusverkko currently maintains and operates the Virve network and its new licence is valid from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2033.

3.7.2025 | The European Commission has awarded EUR 91.01 million under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to nine projects in Finland. Of this, around EUR 59.60 million will go to government initiatives.

19.12.2024 | Finland’s Central Government and other operators are applying for a total of approximately EUR 73.36 million in financial support for 11 transport projects from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport. In addition, EU funding is being sought for the acquisition of a new icebreaker. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 19 December 2024.

20.11.2023 | The World Radiocommunication Conference WRC-23 will start in Dubai on 20 November 2023. The conference decides on the future use of the radio spectrum. The goal is to increase the use of radio frequencies and enable new technologies and services. Finland participates in decision-making at the conference and is globally influencing future communication services to ensure competitiveness and international accessibility. 

17.6.2020 | On 17 June 2020, the Government granted network licences for the 26 GHz spectrum to Elisa Corporation, DNA Plc and Telia Finland Plc, in accordance with the outcome of a spectrum auction. The frequencies are available to the telecom operators for the construction of high-speed wireless 5G networks from the beginning of July.

13.5.2015 | The Finnish Government wants to extend the prohibition on marketing mobile phone subscriptions via telephone. The prohibition, which was originally set for a fixed term, is proposed to be extended by three years. The Government justifies the extension by the facts that the prohibition is functioning and that misleading sales have decreased.

The purpose of the proposal is to protect consumers, in particular, against cybersecurity risks that the increasing number of connected devices can generate.
