16.7.2020 | The EU awarded Finland a total of EUR 58.3 million for five rail projects in the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding application round. Funding was awarded to the one-hour Helsinki-Turku rail link, railway design and construction engineering for the Espoo urban railway, improvement of the Pasila-Riihimäki track, improvement of the rail connection between Kouvola, Kotka and Hamina, and the development of rail transport services between Oulu-Laurila-Tornio-Haaparanta.

2.7.2021 | Digirail aims to achieve safe and efficient train operation. Published on 2 July 2021, the Digirail Report provides details of how railway technical systems will be modernised in Finland. The Digirail project is now moving from preparation to practice as digital train control technology is constructed and piloted on the railways.

In support of the resolution, the Ministry of Transport and Communications has published a more detailed programme on promoting walking and cycling. It is the first government resolution on promoting walking and cycling to which several public operators and organisations have committed.

9.3.2018 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has decided that a railway routing to the Arctic Ocean via Oulu, Rovaniemi and Kirkenes is the one that will be examined further. The benefits of the route are that it would improve Finland's logistical position, accessibility and security of supply. Of the two leading alternatives, the routing via Kirkenes was also less expensive.
