Minister Ranne: Finland’s cooperation with Canada is yielding results
On 31 July 2026, the state-owned special assignment company Arctia, which operates under the ownership steering of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, signed a chartering agreement to operate a multi-purpose icebreaker in the Canadian Arctic in late 2026.
Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne is very pleased with the agreement.
“This agreement shows that there is more demand for Finland’s icebreaking expertise around the world than ever before. Finland has a unique ability to look after its own security of supply and icebreaking while also supporting its NATO Ally. This agreement will strengthen Canada’s security and security of supply,” said Minister Ranne.
The multi-purpose icebreaker will return to the Baltic Sea before the start of the icebreaking season.
Icebreaking is a key component of Finland’s critical infrastructure. Its main function is to ensure that Finland’s foreign trade and winter navigation can continue without interruption in all circumstances year round. Icebreaking ensures the continuity of critical transports and supports military mobility.
Finland has been deepening icebreaker cooperation with its key allies. Finland also works closely with the United States and Canada through the ICE Pact cooperation agreement.
