Government amends the Vehicle Decree and introduces green registration plates for taxis
On 10 September 2026, the Government issued a decree on the colour of registration numbers and registration plates. The decree amends the Vehicle Decree and is scheduled to enter into force on 1 January 2027.
The amendments to the Vehicle Decree are linked to the government proposal on taxi regulation that introduced provisions to the Vehicles Act requiring taxis to display coloured registration plates, so-called taxi plates. The Government submitted that proposal to Parliament on 26 February 2026 and Parliament approved it on 26 June 2026.
The amendment decree adopted by the Government implements the provisions of the Vehicles Act on taxi plates and determines the colour to be used for the plates. According to the decree, the register plates would have black characters on a green background. In selecting the colour scheme, particular attention was paid to visibility, accessibility and the needs of police supervisory duties. In addition, a reference to customs plates will be removed from the Decree as these will no longer be issued.
What’s next?
The amendment is due to enter into force on 1 January 2027, at the same time as the amendments to the Vehicles Act.
